Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of The Wife Who Knew Too Much.
I'm a first time reader of Michele Campbell and was drawn to The Wife Who Knew Too Much after the title and synopsis caught my eye. I was immediately hooked after reading the introductory chapter featuring Nina, a wealthy woman laced with fear towards her husband and his alleged plan to kill her. Following her introduction, we are then introduced to Tabitha, a waitress struggling to make ends meet and Connor, Tabitha's high school boyfriend and member of one of the wealthiest families in New Hampshire. We are given flashbacks of Tabitha and Connor's relationship after Connor shows up to Tabitha's restaurant years later. One thing leads to another and Tabitha and Connor rekindle their relationship, but Connor is now married and his wife is Nina. Nina's chapters were well written and added suspense to the storyline. Unfortunately, the rest fell flat. I found Tabitha to be extremely annoying and the insta-love between her and Connor years later felt rushed. Her inner dialogue made me roll my eyes on more than one occasion and her immediate submission to EVERYTHING that Connor said was just too much for me. Aside from the characters, the overall suspense was limited and by the time I reached the unveiling of the true story behind it all, it didn't pack a punch and an uninspiring resolution of the plot led to a lackluster ending.
