REVIEW: Downfall

★★★★☆

Willow Aster has done it again with Downfall, a romance set in a world filled with lust, greed, pride and wrath. The Safrin and Catano family are about to become one, as Eden and Luka are to become married, an arrangement made between their perspective families and kingdoms. In many cases, two beautiful people getting married would end in happiness and beautiful babies, but not for this prince and princess. This marriage comes with lies, deceit, and even death.

The preface of this book had me feeling a bit apprehensive, with its list of characters and kingdom lineages laid out for study. I wasn't sure if this was going to be a Game of Thrones situation where I needed to print out a family tree and keep it with me so that I could remember who was who! Fortunately, the storyline itself flows nicely and with it being told from only Eden's point of view, I was able to keep up.

Overall, this was a quick read and the storyline kept me interested until the very end. My only complaint is lack of explanation in terms of the story behind Luka's father, King Titus. I'm interested to see if we learn more about him in the second book, Exposed, releasing in January. Exposed is told from the perspective of Luka's sister, Mara, and I'm sure it's going to be juicy because her character was BOLD. I guess I'll start counting down the days until book #2!

Synopsis:

I was naïve to think my marriage to Luka Catano might work. I was infatuated with him from afar… Until I met him. He loved the challenge of his next conquest, anyone would do... Except me. A wife was never something he wanted.

Torturous was not a strong enough word to describe how I felt when I was in a room with Luka. Besides hating nearly every word that came out of his mouth, I also drowned with lust every time I looked at him.

At times I thought he might feel the same.

But nothing prepared me for what his family would make me become.
